My Career at a glance
My Career at a glance
Matthew D. Dietrich
This site is aimed at providing a quick overview of my career as a newspaper reporter, editor and editorial writer. Here, you’ll find samples of my work at four newspapers -- The Hudson Dispatch, The New York Post, The Capital Times and The State Journal-Register -- dating back to late 1987.
Sometimes prospective employers ask applicants for three or four samples of their best work. I’m happy to winnow it down to that, but at this stage in my career, I think my biggest asset is the broad range of experience I have accumulated. I don’t think that can be adequately represented in a handful of clips, so I assembled this site to highlight the breadth of subject matter I’ve covered in a wide variety of settings.
These include organized crime in New Jersey, general assignment breaking news in New York, police and courts in Madison, Wis., and general assignment, feature, arts and editorial writing at The State Journal-Register in Springfield, Ill.
Along the way, I’ve learned a lot about writing and editing; a great deal about working with people; and, most importantly, I’ve learned the importance of listening.
Please take a few minutes to look over my résumé for the basics and then look through the writing samples I’ve assembled. I’ve grouped things together by subject and have tried to provide a little context with brief introductions to each section.
Please contact me if you’d like to see more samples or have any questions.
